When styling your family for a session, it’s easy to focus on the big pieces—dresses, sweaters, accessories—but one detail that often gets overlooked is just as important: shoes!
Believe it or not, your footwear can make or break your overall look in photos. Here’s why shoes are so important and how to choose the right pair for your session:
👣 Shoes Complete the Story
You’ve spent time carefully planning your outfits—now don’t let athletic sneakers or character-themed sandals steal the show. Shoes are a major part of your look and help tell a cohesive visual story from head to toe. When they complement your wardrobe, everything flows beautifully.
🎨 They Pull Together Your Palette
The colors and textures of your shoes should echo your overall color scheme. Think earth tones, soft neutrals, leather textures, or suede finishes. Avoid bright white shoes, neon soles, or heavy black sneakers—they can be distracting and harsh against the soft, warm tones I love to photograph and edit.
🧒 Let the Kids Have Some Fun (Just Not Too Much!)
Shoes are a great way for your kids to show a little personality! Think neutral-colored sneakers, leather slip-ons, boots, or sandals. Just skip the light-up soles or anything too bold in color—it pulls focus away from their adorable faces and the emotion we’re capturing.
✨ Comfort and Style
Choose shoes that not only look good but also allow you to move freely. My sessions are lifestyle-focused, meaning we’ll be walking, cuddling, spinning, and maybe even chasing littles through a field. Comfortable, well-fitted shoes make it all easier—and they’ll look better when you’re relaxed and not worrying about blisters.
