The Unexpected Gift of Photography: Friendship

A behind-the-scenes look at what I didn’t see coming—but now couldn’t imagine this journey without.

When I first picked up my camera and stepped into the world of photography, I had no idea how much it would change my life—not just creatively, but personally. Of course, I expected to grow as an artist, learn how to run a business, and tell stories through my lens. But what I didn’t expect? The friendships.

Photography can be a lonely career. You’re often editing late at night, emailing clients solo, and running the entire show behind the scenes. For a while, I felt that weight—feeling like I was in it alone. But then something shifted.

I started meeting other photographers. Some local, some through Instagram. We started chatting, swapping tips, cheering each other on, and eventually—shooting together. That community changed everything.

Since then, I’ve had the absolute joy of traveling all over the U.S. meeting these amazing creatives in person. We’ve shared epic sunset sessions, deep convos over coffee, wild golden hour shootouts, and countless belly laughs. I’ve found a tribe that truly gets it—and I’m so thankful for that.

To help foster this community, I began hosting local headshot swaps and eventually started Inspired Souls Shootouts—weekend retreats designed for photographers to come together, create, connect, and grow. These events are about more than building a portfolio—they’re about building friendships, confidence, and a supportive circle in what can often feel like a very solo career.

Looking back, I can say without a doubt that one of the greatest gifts photography has given me is the people. I’ve collaborated on beautiful creative projects, grown through connection, and made lifelong friends all because I picked up a camera.

So if you're a photographer feeling a little isolated—know this: it doesn’t have to be lonely. There’s a whole world of creatives out there ready to support you, dream with you, and create alongside you.

And if you're local or ever thinking of joining a shootout...come sit with us. We’ve got room for you.

With a grateful heart,
