What to Expect at a Session with Toddlers — and Why Letting Go of Perfection is the Best Thing You Can Do

If you’ve ever looked at dreamy family photos and thought, “There’s no way my toddler would ever sit still for that,”—you are not alone. And I’m here to tell you… that’s okay. In fact, it’s perfect.

When you’re in the toddler season of life, chaos is kind of the name of the game. And I’m not just expecting it at your session—I’m embracing it. I thrive in it. The wiggles, the snack breaks, the meltdowns, the sprinting away from the camera... this is real life with littles. And it's worth remembering.

Lifestyle over perfection — always.

I don’t expect perfectly still kids or forced smiles. What I want to capture is your real family, as you are in this beautiful, fleeting season. The way your toddler fits just right in your arms. The way they grab your hand when they’re feeling unsure. The giggles. The pouts. The joy in their eyes when mom or dad scoops them up for a tickle fight.

These are the moments that matter. These are the memories that will mean everything someday.

Smile through it, and soak it in.

During your session, my biggest advice to parents is this: smile through the chaos and stay connected to each other and your little one. Don’t stress if someone isn’t cooperating perfectly—just keep snuggling, playing, and being present. Your calm and love are what shine through most in the photos.

Yes, I have tricks up my sleeve.

After years of photographing families with toddlers, I’ve collected lots of little tricks to help coax out smiles, redirect wild energy, and keep things fun and light. Whether it’s a silly sound, a favorite game, or just knowing when to step back and give space, I’ll be there gently guiding the flow and making sure we get the beautiful images you’re dreaming of.

You don’t need a “perfect” child or a “perfect” moment. You just need to show up as you are and love on your people. I’ll take care of the rest.
